It's ok to mess it up!

Don't limit yourself with expectations.

In order to avoid pressure I won’t speak of artworks when talking about sketchbooks. Because there should not be this feeling of ‚having to make something awesome‘, when opening the book. Sketching anything every day, means: sketching a notion or a feeling or something of the daily life right out of your soul. NO EVALUATION of the result. No limitation. Sketch whatever comes to your mind.

Because wanting to perform in a special way or aiming a specific output, results in restriction. Which means that you do not allow your hand to try out new styles, techniques or expressions – maybe because of the fear to mess up the page – and then the entire sketchbook.
Therefore: a sketchbook page isn’t an artwork but a place of experimentation and freedom for your hand and your mind. Don’t limit yourself with expectations.

You are full of inspiration

The sketchbook gives us the freedom to draw what comes into our mind – it’s not a commission, so we have no briefing limitations, deadlines or result expections. Use this freedom to elaborate your drawing style by simply relying on your inner muse. Inspiration is everywhere, you are full of inspiration inside– the most important and most difficult part is to create a bridge between your inner voice and the sketchbook page.

How to bridge the gap?

It’s you, who is sketching, but you do not know the final piece either. The whole sketching journey is pure adventure as we never know, what our mind creates – inspired by so many influences, that are made unconsciously during the day.

But how to bridge this gap between your inner inspiration and the empty page?

Close your eyes – and wait for the first notion or feeling that comes to your mind. Without influencing this process. Just let your thoughts flow and wait for the word that will stay with you.

Take this word and start sketching. Without any hesitation. To create this bridge between your inner voice and the sketchbook, you simply need to give your hand the freedom to express feelings, states, words, things, new colors, new techniques, … Trust your hand – she will know what to do.

And as soon as you give yourself the freedom to mess it up – you are free to sketch! Enjoy it!

Hallo, I'm an illustrator and Skillshare teacher from Austria. After great experiences in the Marketing and Database sector, I finally realised that I simply need to follow my enthusiasm and fascination for drawing and illustrating.

What fascinates me most, is this way to communicate without using any words. So expressive, so global. And this leads me to my second fascination about drawing: the exchange with others, with you! In my drawing courses I simply love to see the enormous developments of each participant - initiated by exchange and practice. That's what I like to do here, too.

I know, the comment fields are lacking. But my social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram are great tools for communication (would be awesome if you follow me there) and the blog seems to be a good mean for showing you topics in a more extensive way. The idea for this blog comes from the bottom of my heart: to get you close to drawing and to show you that you too can draw #drawinggang

It's all about learning to feel the drawing!
